Bats

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Brown Bat Last night we had another bat visitor; this is our third bat of the year. Ironically, Folwell had one as well yesterday. Our other two bats were quickly caught (sort of) and released. This one proved more difficult and moved into the basement. We expect it has gone back to sleep somewhere in one of the many nooks and crannies that exist down there and we figure he’s probably asleep again until spring.

So being a full on geek, I hit the internet… looking for how to get a bat out, here’s what I found out.

  1. Allow the bat to land, catching it mid air may hurt the bat.
  2. Toss a towel (never any sort of netting) over the bat and scoop it up carefully. Some folks recommend a wet (not dripping) towel.
  3. If it’s on a wall, place a coffee can or other hard container over the bat and slide cardboard or the lid under the can gently coaxing the bat into the can.
  4. Wear gloves, if possible, when handling the bat. Bats can cary disease.
  5. Trap them in a room and open any exterior windows or doors in that room, they’ll likely leave on their own.

Anyone wanting to know more about bats can find lots of good information here, here and here.

Buy Our House!

Monday, December 1st, 2008

House Front I finally got around to getting the Chicagoland house website up. It’s also in the MLS listing database, but we’re hoping this additional coverage will help. We also lowered the price, effective tomorrow.

Gretchen Bakes: Part 2

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

As a follow-up to the original Gretchen Bakes post, we’ve been assembling and decorating Gingerbread houses this morning. Assembly began bright and early (along with some sampling of the candy) and wrapped up a little bit ago. Oskar worked very hard to decorate the “yard” of his house, while Xavier and I worked on a mix of the “yard” and the “house”. Gretchen did the major construction efforts of the three houses making them take shape. We still have one blank slate to go. (more…)

Winter’s Here!

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

We’ve had two days in a row now that we’ve been able to see snow falling! Certainly not enough to do much interesting in, but still snow. Gretchen, Oskar and Xavier have been battling colds over the last week, but have started to pull through. We’ve spent the last two days working on the house here – reorganizing (and re-wiring) the laundry room and beginning the huge cleanup efforts after the mess that was created during the kitchen counter install. Everyone survived the Fest this year, Memphis was very cool. (more…)

Weekend

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Tomorrow I leave for Memphis leaving Gretchen behind for the fest since we’ve known each other! Oskar and Xavier got haircuts yesterday and Honesty Box for Facebook has been keeping me busy for the last few weeks.

The kitchen here at the house is still under construction, the counters have been installed in the Kitchen (but not the pantry) and the faucet we had selected didn’t fit on the sink, so that will be installed next week. Translation, no running water or dishwasher in the kitchen until next Tuesday! It all started this last Monday morning, when the new counter tops were installed.

Garage Insulation Project

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Well, work has started on the garage and is progressing quickly. Drywall and insulation is hung on the exposed wall studs, now only the doors remain and Xavier’s room will be warm for that next 0 degree night! It has already made some improvement since the doors are a good 12″ below the roof of the garage a nice pillow of warmer air seems to be keeping Xavier’s room warmer. The doors should be finished next week.
