Did I Mention You Should Make a Backup?

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Parallels It only took 6 short hours to re-install Windows Vista on my Mac. I recommend you backup any virtual disk images for Parallels you have now - because that took FOREVER! It was an oversight of mine from the hard drive failure. There was nothing important as far as “data” on the volume, but man, what a pain… Install XP, Upgrade to Vista, patch Vista, Install Supporting Apps (like Flash/Firefox etc). I’m creating an archive and copying it off to the backup disk now…

Science Museum of Minnesota

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Today we (Rachel, Kevin, Gretchen, me and the boys) headed into St. Paul to the Science Museum of Minnesota and checked out all of the exhibits including the Pompeii one which is ending soon. It’s a cool museum for kids and I would highly recommend heading out there if you’ve got some and are in the area. The Pompeii exhibit was a little tough for the kids, but was interesting for us. Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

They boy’s were up bright and early this morning waiting to open presents. Gretchen gave them a bath and we’ve done stockings already, waiting for everyone to wake up and arrive. More pictures sure to follow later. They’re eating chocolate now getting a good head of stream for the unwrapping.Merry Christmas!

Redskins Game (They Won!)

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Kevin bought Vikings vs. Redskins tickets for the game last night as a Christmas present for the big boys in the family. I uploaded all of the photos I took during the game from our insanely good 2nd row seats. We had a great view of the game and some of the action so close we could make calls before they were reviewed from the pictures (after the link below you can see them all.) Be warned — there’s about 150 pictures there so it might take a while to load. Despite wearing Redskins colors, the fans were pretty good to everyone and there were only two fights on our side of the dome. (more…)

Gretchen Bakes: Part 2

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

As a follow-up to the original Gretchen Bakes post, we’ve been assembling and decorating Gingerbread houses this morning. Assembly began bright and early (along with some sampling of the candy) and wrapped up a little bit ago. Oskar worked very hard to decorate the “yard” of his house, while Xavier and I worked on a mix of the “yard” and the “house”. Gretchen did the major construction efforts of the three houses making them take shape. We still have one blank slate to go. (more…)

Gretchen Bakes: Part 1

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Today Gretchen spent the better part of the afternoon making Gingerbread house pieces so that tomorrow the grand assembly can begin. She has made 3 amazing looking blank sets of house pieces ready to become the master pieces of young hands. She also made a really great batch of toffee too!

Peter Jackson to Film the Hobbit

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

The One Ring TheOneRing.net reports that Peter Jackson, the master mind behind the Lord of the Rings Trilogy based on JRR Tolkien’s story will be filming the Hobbit! It’s funny because just last night I decided to pop one of the old DVD’s into the player and watched the first disc in the trilogy. Only a couple of short years and I know what I’ll be doing. It’s mine, my precioussssssssss….

Adonomics Now Values Honesty Box at Over $6M

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Honesty Box For those of you who don’t know, for the last 6-7 months I’ve been working on a Facebook application called Honesty Box. Honesty Box lets users on Facebook send each other anonymous messages and replies knowing that there’s a level of protection built in that reduces the likely-hood of spam because of the close nature of the social network. Dan Peguine, a co-founder, hired me to assist him and his partner in June with the explosive growth of the application and I’ve been working on it ever since. Adonomics is currently the benchmark by which applications can guestimate their worth in the marketplace. Of course this estimate and finding a buyer are two different things, but it’s an important gauge of the applications value. We have been tracking our “worth” through Adonomics for a while and have seen some interesting phenomena. Today when I checked our valuation, we were at $6.2 Million! (more…)

More on MN Homebrew Shops

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

Google Maps I did some searching online this morning while Xavier played Nintendo and found that while there are a number of resources for homebrewers in Minnesota, there really wasn’t a full of homebrew supply shops that’s been vetted. So rather than create a list of cities that I’m unfamiliar with, I visualized it on this map using the data from a number of resources, including MNBeer.com and by using a few manufactures websites and looking at their “where to buy” listing.

Rochester Homebrew Shop

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Photo by: Steffe, courtesy of Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/steffe/7503876/ I’m finding my way around Rochester! I found a homebrew shop the other day and the boys went with me this morning to check it out. The Von Klopp Brew Shop sells beer and wine making supplies! Since the nearest brewpub I’ve been able to locate is around 30 minutes away, next year I just might dust off some of my old recipes and try them out again - perhaps even try a few new ones like those found in Zymurgy, the official publication of the American Homebrewers Association.
